That would have been difficult since Quetzalcoatl was a mythical deity of the Mayans and Aztecs, and was often portrayed as a giant winged serpent. The Aztecs in Mexico welcomed the Spanish under Cortes because they thought they were the human forms of Quetzalcoatl.
The looting occurred in the Incan Empire (with which Quetzalcoatl was not related) when the Spanish killed the palace guard of the Incan king Atahualpa and held him for ransom, later killing him anyway.
