There were various experiments with exploding shells using gunpowder around 1400 in Europe. But metal cannonballs were cheaper and more common, being widely used after the 14th century. They also still used wooden siege engines, and weapons such as the onager, catapult, and trebuchet.

The Japanese used many incendiary weapons, such as fire bombs launched from catapults, and using fireworks as a weapon against wooden gates.
