Very good question. As a graduate student studying hematopoietic tumorigenesis, I ask myself the same question daily. Ultimately I don't seem a difference as the term are strictly defined, though it appears that many bioloist use self-renewal when they refer to cells that not only exhibit proliferation potential but whose progency have the potential to develop into more than one lineage. Contrast a proliferating ES cell vs a proliferating Monocyte. But then again, I could see holes in that distinction as well.
Receptor proteins are fond in cell membrane surfaces. They are not transport proteins, they conduct the signalling event that cause the cell proliferation, migration and cell death process such as apoptosis. Hormones activates such signalling cascades by binding on the hormone receptors of the cell.
