volatile oils:-

  1. These are volatile at room temperature & are usually obtained by distillation.
  2. When evaporate do not leave any spot.
  3. These cannot be saponified.
  4. These are mixtures of cleoptenes & stearoptenes.

Fixed oils:-

  1. Non volatile at room temp & can be obtained by special extraction process.
  2. These leave spot after evaporation.
  3. These can be saponified.
  4. These are esters of higher fatty acids & glycerin.
