An occasional criminal would be someone who on occasion might shoplift, or take leave a restaurant and not pay for their meal. A professional criminal, makes his or her living by illicit dealings. Their criminal activity is constant as opposed to only infrequently.

the diff is that an occasional or routine criminal defined, by the routine activities theory, is that the occasional criminal only performs the act if the opportunity occurs in his/her routine of daily life. Ex. someone is walking by a car & it happens to be unlocked & the person notices they might take their car stereo. A professional criminal perfroms crimes as a daily activity & most likely for their primary source of income unlike the occasional in that crime would be a second or third source of income. -Rusty Arcieri-

A career criminal is an individual who has made a life of crime a day to day job or occurrence. A professional criminal is an individual who commits crimes with detail and mystery, which is often hard to solve and capture.
