As a mechanic I can tell you the main disadvantage is the cost to be a mechanic. A lot of people don't realise that it actually costs money to be a mechanic. Each mechanic is basically his own shop. If you plan to get started in this field you will have to have your own tools/toolbox. Employers don't provide this for you. When I first started about 5 years ago I spent over $200 before I even started my first day of work. This was for a basic set of Craftsman tools. Keep in mind that this is no where near the amount of tools that you will need to repair vehicles. After a little over 5 years I have already spent over $25,000 on tools and toolboxes. The people that I work with have been in this line of work for over 24 years and they have spent well over $50,000 on tools and toolboxes. Every time a new vehicle comes out there seems to be another "special" tool that you need to fix something. It is a never-ending process. For as long as you are in this line of work, you will be buying tools and bigger toolboxes to hold them all. My toolbox alone was $7400. The good news is that when you start working at a shop they should have tool trucks that come around once a week. (Matco, Snap-On, Mac, etc.) Ask them if they do first! If not you will have to find them on your own. These tools are more expensive than Craftsman, Husky, etc., but they are better, and will last longer. Also if you ever break one the next time the tool truck comes around you hand them the broken tool and they hand you a brand new one, no questions asked. (Lifetime warranty) All of the major tool companies listed above have credit programs. For example you can get $1500 worth of tools for $20/week. You will have to pay them on a weekly basis. Of course you will also have to have decent credit for this. As with everything, the better your credit, the higher your spending limit will be. This is definitely not a line of work you want to just blindly jump into. It is a life long investment, but it can payoff.

What is a Disadvantage of being an auto mechanic?

Dirty hands, other than that I think it's all positives. I'm a doctor and my brother is an auto mechanic. I often wish I knew what he knew and could fix my own car; especially when it costs my $200 just to fix my brakes! A trade is always a good idea, rich people don't know jack and most can't even fix a broken toilet!
