Protein shakes can be incorporated into a healthy diet, they are not designed to replace a healthy diet just to supplement it.

Protein shakes are best used I find after a workout to feed the muscles and help them repair / grow. Eating a meal approximately 1 hour after is also advisable to get maximum benefit.
