Are golden hamsters Syrian hamsters?
Yes, it's just another name of calling them:). As well as Golden Hamsters, Syrian hamsters are also sometimes referred to as teddy bear hamsters (long haired syrian hamsters), alien hamsters (hairless syrian hamsters), black bear or european black bear (black syrian hamsters). They are all variations in colour/coat of the same species of hamster. I believe all hamsters are from Syrian so they all have a common ancestry

No, teddy bear hamsters are Syrian hamsters.
Do hamsters change their coat for the winter?
Winter White Russian hamsters are well known for changing their coat in winter. As the name suggests, they go white in winter (it's used as camouflage against the snow in the wild) and during summer they go brown (to blend in with their background after the snow has melted).

The most popular breeds of hamsters are dwarfs, Chinese, and Teddy Bear (Syrian)/Golden) hamsters. I wouldn't be able to tell what breed of hamster you have without seeing it. But I can give a description of each one. There are many types of dwarf hamsters including the Campbell's Dwarf Hamster, Russian Dwarf Hamster and Roborovski Hamster. They are the smallest of the hamsters with the Robo(rovski) measuring just 2 inches when fully grown, their colors range from white to dark gray and often have a darker dorsal stripe. The Chinese hamster compared to other hamsters has a longer tail (around 2cm) and a thinner longer body, their natural coat is browny grey with a dorsal stripe but other color variations are available. Finally the Syrian hamster is much bigger than Chinese and Dwarves and their coat is commonly a 'golden' brown. They can grow to around 7 inches when fully mature. Hamsters were first discovered in 1839 in the Syrian desert in the Middle East. They were thought to be extinct, but in 1930 a scientist in Syria found a nest with a female and 11 babies. Four hamsters lived and the first hamsters were brought to England in 1931 and to the United States in 1938. It was discovered that they made good pets and by 1950 there were 100,000 golden hamsters in the United States. Hamsters were living in relative obscurity until just 70 years ago, when a zoologist discovered a family of these rodents in the Syrian desert. Today, hamsters' friendly nature and adaptability have placed them among America's most popular small pets.

I think a winter coat with a zipper does a better job in keeping the cold out since the zipper have no excess holes in the zipper area then the winter coats.
