Concert bands and Marching Bands use many clarinets. The Clarinet section is typically the largest section of a concert band. They are one of the lead voices of the woodwind section and are often used in place of the violins in transcriptions of orchestral music.

Marching bands also use clarinets, but because they are not as loud as brass instruments, they are often used to play high ornamental parts. For main melody or harmony lines, the clarinet is used in softer sections or to double brass parts when a smoother sound is wanted.

Rock and pop bands rarely use clarinets, but clarinets are often found in jazz combos and ensembles. In the days of the big bands (1930's in to the 1950's) Benny Goodman and Arie Shaw played the clarinet and led their bands.

What are the musical ensembles that the clarinet can play?

Clarinets are used in any and every musical ensemble. Symphonic bands, symphonic orchestras, jazz, marching bands... Some places even have clarinet choirs devoted entirely to the various clarinets.

What kind of clarinets are in the orchestra?

Always: Bb soprano clarinets and Bass clarinets, sometimes: Soprano A and Eb clarinets, very rarely: other varieties of clarinet (piccolo clarinet, basset horn, basset clarinet, contra alto/contrabass, alto clarinet, etc.)Bb soprano clarinets (the common clarinet) and bass clarinets are always used in orchestras and bands. Orchestra music (bands not as commonly, but still sometimes) frequently call for soprano A and soprano Eb clarinets, so usually Bb players learn an alternate clarinet and play it when they're not playing the normal Bb part. Other kinds of clarinets, such as basset clarinet, tenor clarinet, and basset horn, are rarely used (not never used, just not nearly as commonly.) Alto clarinets are used much more frequently in bands than in orchestras.

What is a popular wood wind used in large groups in concert and parade bands?

Flutes, Clarinets, and Saxophones are all used in concert and parade bands. Saxophone would probably be the most popular. I think that oboes are also used in concert and parade bands.

Are there clarinets in the marching band?

Clarinets are a vital part of any woodwind section, and thus are in high school bands. Sometimes colleges will march clarinets, as well, but sometimes they only take brass and percussion. DCI never marches woodwinds, though, because it is a drum corps, and a drum corps, by definition, only has brass and precussion.

What are the names of the woodwind instruments in a orchestra?

There are flutes, piccolos, clarinets, oboes, bass clarinets, bassoons, and all saxophones. Most school bands only have alto and tenor saxophones, maybe a bari-sax, and rarely a soprano saxophone.

Which composer did not use a clarinet?

The clarinet was not introduced until sometime after the year 1700, and wasn't common until after 1750, so composers working before that did not use clarinets. J.S. Bach, for example didn't use clarinets in his orchestral works.
