Dogs exist because there was an ecological niche for them in their original form i.e. Wolves. they then began a mutually beneficial relationship with early man which led to their domestication. Man then selectively bred them to accentuate desirable traits both physically and temperamentally. THats the potted scientific / anthropoogical answer, the other reason is that somethink has to show Cats that they don't actually rule the world
