Mmmm, here's the deal. Insects can survive in water for a while because they breathe through their bodies and small bubbles of air cling to the minute hairs on their bodies. You can't get rid of fleas by submerging the animal in water, it just won't work. Not to mention air is also trapped in the animal's fur. You really need some sort of "flux" to get the air off them and poison the bugs. Shampoo for fleas is great as it also has a poison for fleas, but if you don't have any and can't get any, a good human shampoo will do in a punch and usually works if you lather up the animal, rinse, lather and rinse. It will usually kill the fleas off and they'll wash off the body with a good rinsing. Make sure to use your hands and really massage and scrub. Good luck
Basic Flea Facts:
Fleas lay eggs everyday on your pets, in your carpets, or any other soft surface if you have them and have been dealing with the problem for a while. One flea can lay up to 10,000 eggs in their life time and can settle in your hair, pet's hair, or soft surface in about 10 minutes. They also love to rest on your socks or slippers to keep warm. They disappear in the winter and reappear when summer comes around.
Preventing and Killing:There are many products out there to prevent and repel fleas, most harmful on your pet more than the fleas themselves. A good trick to kill fleas that hide in your carpet is to sprinkle salt on it. It dehydrates the fleas and kills them before the eggs hatch. Then, in a day or so vacuum up the salt. Also, I suggest organic flea soaps and medications. Ask your vet about getting your pet a safe medication.
Waterproof:I do not believe fleas are waterproof, that is why I give my own pet frequent baths whenever I suspect a flea problem. We have also tested some of the soaps you purchase at simple stores like Walmart or so and they irritate my pets skin and leave a red rash
