No hermit crabs inspect a new shell inside of their cage the they pull them self out of the shell and then drop them self into a new shell. there are videos on youtube.com of crabs changing shells. so provide your crab with extra shells. i am a hermit crab owner i have watched my crabs change shells it is called molting.

yes they do becuse if they dont the part that goes in the shell is very tender and soft and can get dameged very easy so its good to have difernt sized empty shells in the cage so the crab can change the shells when needed

Yes! It is very important that a hermit crab has a shell, it is used to protect their bodies. It also saves them from getting eaten by other animals! Though sometimes, you find hermit crabs that haven't found a shell that isn't the right size or shape, and instead of a shell, they might carry things like bottle tops. Usually, hermit crabs try to avoid situations like this but, when they urgently need to change into another shell because their current shell is too small, it will be unavoidable.
They are just having fun.
No, hermit crab mites are specific to hermit crabs and will not harm you or your pets.
hermit crabs need a beach to lay their eggs on so they wont have babies in their cage.
First, you'll need saltwater and fresh water, the crabs will like to have a net or rock of some sort to climb and play on, they also like a separate dish for their food. Hermit crab toys are available in a local pet store. A coconut cut in half and a doorway will do perfectly for a house and hiding spots for your hermit crab.
basically, whenever needed. check daily for anything wrong in its cage. change food daily.
