Sunlight hits the green pigment on the leaves and splits water into hydrogen and oxygen. Then the hydrogen combines with carbon dioxide to make sugar. The plant throws away the oxygen. The only place light must reach is the green pigment on the leaves. The only place food must reach is your mouth. You do not get any nourishment from the food you spill all over your clothes.

The soil does not need sunlight in order to nourish plants.
