It can be (hissing snakes, hissing cats). It is the present participle of the verb to hiss, and is otherwise a verb form or a noun (gerund).
A cockroaches "skin" is actually what's called an exoskeleton... Basically it is a really strong protective covering on the cockroaches because unlike us they don't have bones on the inside of their bodies. Exoskeletons contain chitin and when calcium carbonate is added it grows in strength and hardness.
