Actually, witches don't really fly on broomsticks. It is a common misconception that was created by Hollywood. Witches/Wiccans "ride" on broomsticks, or run around with it between their legs, at the Beltane (May 1st) celebration to encourage fertility, jumping over a bonfire with it. Flying on broomsticks were associated with Samhain (Halloween) because it "sold better".

The process of levitation required to fly is not an easy one... the term "flying" may well come for a misinterpretation of a description of Astral Projection. Something that all humans are capable of but few actually do. It is a common thing for many practitioners of many of the known forms of Paganism and Shamanism to travel using astral projection, be it for ritual or personal reasons. Only in fiction (and the occasional pieces of ancient Propaganda) do you find "witches" flying around on broomsticks.

The traditional stories of evil flying witches running around casting spells and turning people into frogs is simply mythical folklore that came into being in the 15th and 16th century.

However, "witches" really do exist in the modern world. In 1954 the world saw a growth in the popularity of a religious organization known as "Wicca". The followers of Wicca, practice a form of witchcraft and feel that their power emanates from nature and can be manipulated through the casting of spells and meditation.

Many Wiccans do refer to themselves as "witches", but they are NOT the evil mythical flying witches of old. In fact one of the primary mandates of the Wiccan religion is that they may only use their powers to help humanity and may NOT use it for self gain.
