The Dred Scott decision by the US Supreme Court strengthened the cause of pro slavery people, especially in the South. As a subjective answer to this, I maintain that the Court decision did not affect, or bring the USA to Civil War. There is no evidence to the contrary. Therefore I stand on this opinion.

∙ 10y agoIf anything, a strong case can be made that the 1857 US Supreme Court decision on the Dred Scott case created more of a distance between peace and war amongst the States.
With the Supreme Court decision, slavery as an institution was validated. It must be remembered that the rebellion creating the US Civil War was partly due to the fears of the South that the institution of slavery was at risk. The "neutral" and "constitutional supreme body" in the Federal government, the Supreme Court as a defacto victory for slave owners.
The decision also validated the next US President's view that the Federal government, especially the executive branch had no authority to outlaw slavery. That was the stated view of President Lincoln.
