on its kickstand, atleast on a level surface if you have one, doesnt have to be perfect, but close enough
There should be a sight glass on the left lower side of the motor. The oil should be visable in the glass.
The most common reason for lights failure on 1985-88 Yamaha Virago XV 100's is battery problems. Check to see that the battery is in working condition and sufficiently charged. If the battery is fine, there may be a problem with the main fuse and the ones below the indicator panel.
while on level ground with the kickstand down.
20W-50 is typically used in these bikes but to be sure check the manufacturers' recommendation. I would recommend a synthetic oil specially formulated for motorcycle wet clutch applications.
As far as I know, there was no Virago 1110; I suppose you're referring to the Virago XV1100. I don't have it's factory manual, but the Clymer service manual covers it, and according to that the spark gap should be 0.7-0.8 mm, as with most of these bikes. Actually, the required plugs (NGK BP7ES or BPR7ES, depending on who do you trust - the difference is an incorporated series resistor in the "R" plug) seem to come factory-set to that gap, but it never hurts to check, I guess...
There is a coin-sized round inspection window on the engine block cover, shifter-side, front-bottom, that looks gear-shaped when empty, dark when full with oil. Level should be between the min and max markers, when the oil is warm, and the bike is UPRIGHT.
Start it up for about 5 mins, then let is set for about 1 min. Try to stand it upright (I use a 2X4 under my kickstand and it gets pretty level) and remoce the Oil stick, wipe clean and reinsert. You do NOT have to screw the stick in to get the proper reading on oil, just redip and it should be at the crosshairs. gl
Stand your bike upright. Get down and look where you put the oil in, then look even lower and you will sew a window the size of a half doallr coin. If the oil level is below 25% you need oil.
there is a part in the engine that has a black twist cap on it, and when you open it it will have an oil dipstick so you can check if you need oil, and if you do, you just put it in there. I have a V-star 650 from 98. It doesn't have a dipstick. There is a window right under the kickstand on the left side of the bike. if you can't see very much oil in the window fill her up.
Very unlikely. Check with your local Yamaha shop.
