However, Article II of the U.S. Constitution sets rules for who can serve as President. The requirements are:
- Be a natural born citizen of the United States
- Be at least 35 years of age
- Have lived in the U.S. at least 14 years. Three single persons have so far been elected to the U.S. Presidency:
- James Buchanan (1791-1868) was 15th U.S. President (1857-1861)
- Chester A. Arthur (1829-1886) was 21st U.S. President (1881-1885)
- Grover Cleveland (1837-1908) was 22nd (1885-1889) & 24th (1893-1897) President. * James Buchanan had become a confirmed bachelor years before his election after his fiancee broke off their engagement and died shortly after. * Chester A. Arthur had married, but his wife died 20 months before he took office. * Grover Cleveland entered office as a single man but married a year and a half into his first term.
