The simplest answer to this question is - how would you like to spend all day living in your own pee and poop? Periodic water changes, filter cleaning and gravel cleaning are necessary parts of aquarium ownership, just like sweeping your house and opening the windows to let in some fresh air. The aquarium filter does not magically remove fish wastes from the water, it just provides a home for the bacteria that change the most toxic dissolved wastes (ammonia) into less harmful substances. It's good practise to change 25% of the water once a fortnight to dilute these substances, because if they are allowed to build up for months on end they are still bad for your fish. You should also use a gravel vacuum to clean the gravel once every month or so. Algae also tends to grow more in an unclean tank - algae on the glass will not hurt your fish, but it looks awful. And that's the other reason to keep your tank clean - it just looks nicer!

∙ 12y agono they wont die, i had fish before and i cleaned it about 1 time a week! My friend has a fish and her fish has lived a long time and she cleans it like once every week too! :)

If you decide to have a small tank or bowl try not to over fill it with plants and other decorations (give your fish some space) :) you can still decorate but make sure your fish has some breathing room. Also with small tank you have to clean it freakently which isn't a problem once you get into a rutine. Cleaning every other day is a good idea. People might tell you to clean every day but I wouldn't do this as it might stress out your fish.

What fishes eat the stuff at the bottom of the tank?
Bottom dwellers. That could be any kind of bottom dweller, not just catfish like Plecos and Corydoras. These fish won't eat poop though, they will not keep your tank clean. In fact Plecos are HUGE waste producers, quite the opposite of any cleaner, I have to remove poop from my Pleco tank every day or it starts to pile up!If you're after a bottom dweller to clean your tank for you, you're out of luck, nothing cleans a tank but you!

if the fish has gotten used to staying in the same tank then im sure they will realize that there isn't a different path to go every other day.

no chances are this is not what killed them, it is much more likely to be that she over fed them. fish in a tank should only be fed every other day and should be cleaned out once a week by removing 25% of the tank water.
