Believe it or not I used pea gravel. It was half the cost of sand and just as effective. I used three tons for a 24ft. above ground pool and I also put a tarp between the pea gravel and the pool. No problems at all. Works great for me, but maybe not for everyone.
You say, 'where my above ground pool use to be.' Is there a shallow, medium or deep hole to be filled? or a slight depression?
A hole would be better filled with a mixture of sand, soil and gravel, especially if a lawn is to be laid over the top. A slight depression would still need a mixture of soil and sand. Sand alone could be washed away by heavy rain. Less likely if the sand is covered with turf. It is best to match the ground of the site of the removed pool with the rest of the area to ensure a stable surface overall.
I suppose any thing is possible but it would be pretty difficult to find something with the properties of sand at a price that is affordable.
maybe a good soft load of topsoil or find some sand on a sand bar for free:)
If you mean under the liner yes it protects the liner and makes it more comfortable for the users.
