no, jack up the car and as you are laying underneath it you will see a pan behind or beside the oil pan with about 10-16 small bolts in it. take those out front to back to drain transmission fluid...then remove pan. you do not need to remove any part of the car to access the transmission pan

Anyhow, it's a simple bolt-on part... you'll need a transmission jack to hold up the transmission while you remove the cross member, and you simply unbolt it.

I've never done this with the engine in the car, but I think this is how it should go. This applies to manual transmissions only. (1) Remove the retainers on the yoke, at the rearend, that hold the drive line in place. Then push the drive line forward, move it out of the yoke, then pull it rearward out of the transmission. (2) Support the rear of the engine so it can not rock backwards when the transmission is detached. (3) Remove the shift lever and remove the two bolts that hold the transmission to the cross member. (4) Remove the four bolts attacking the cross member to the frame. Rotate the cross member to remove. You may need to raise the rear of the engine slightly to take pressure off the cross member. (5) Remove the four bolts attaching the transmission to the bell housing. Be sure to support the transmissions with a floor jack or something, they can be heavy. Then safely remove the transmission. (7) Remove the spring and linkage connecting to the the throw out fork. (8) Next remove the 6 bolts holding the bell housing to the rear of the engine, then remove the bell housing. (9) Remove the bolts holding the pressure plate to the flywheel. You should now be able to remove the pressure plate and clutch disc. (10) Install the new clutch disc with a line up shaft. (11) Install the pressure plate and torque the bolts to the suggested torque. (Generally 25 to 40 ft-lbs.) (12) You will probably want to replace the throw out bearing also while you have the bell housing removed. (12) Remove the line up shaft, replace and secure the bell housing. (13) Reconnect the clutch linkage and spring. (14) The rest of the process is the reverse of removal.

I have a 1993 Nissan D21 pickup. 4 cylinder 5 speed manual transmission. To remove mine completely out of the truck - pull the shifter cover from the carpet and remove the screws holding the cover on. You need to remove the shifter, 4 bolts and it slides up and off the transmission. the 4wd shifter can be pulled out of the way by removing the guides bolted to the transmission, 2 guides, 2 bolts each. -remove the drive shafts, rear and front if 4wd -unplug any sensors air flow lines, and the clutch slave cylinder, 2 bolts. - remove the rear cross member (two bolts on each side of the frame) this also invoved taking the pressure off the tortion bars and unbolting them from the front, which i found to be easiest. That involved 3 bolts and nuts on the front of each bar. -remove the front cross member, which the transmission is bolted to. The transmission will then lower itself a bit without the support of the crossmember. HAVE THE TRANSMISSION SUPPORTED BY NOW WITH A FLOOR JACK OR 2. -unbolt the transmission from the engine block along the bell housing, exposing the clutch and pressure plate. This includes the starter which has two tranny bolts holding it on. I got to mine easily through the passanger wheel well. The transmission should now be floating in your arms ready to be cared for. all in all it realy only takes about 4 hours. very simple. KEEP BOLTS AND NUTS ORGANIZED OF COURSE. plastic bags or cups, labeled. you want your assembly to be as smooth as possible.

I'm having the same problem right now but this is the options I have come up with... If you can, remove the cross member. On my truck the bolts are rusted and seized, I tried copious amounts of penetrating oil to no avail. Be careful with heat because there is a gas line hidden on the frame member right above where the cross member is bolted on.(I'd avoid heat.) Option two... Drill holes through the cross member and make them large enough to get your socket through to the bolts. Care must be taken line the holes up with the bolts. It shouldn't weaken the cross member enough to worry about. Option three... and I do not know if this will work. Remove the bolts from the motor mounts and check and remove anything that can be crushed between the motor and the firewall. Then jack your engine and tranny up just enough to give you enough clearance to get those pesky bolts out. I think this would be a last resort though. Option four... Heat and bend a wrench to fit onto the bolts but still clear the cross member. Let the wrench cool down before use... Or maybe buy an offset box head wrench? Option five... When in doubt, phone your local Chevy dealer and ask to speak to a mechanic. Ask him (or her), something like... "Hey, how do you change the transmission fluid out in a 1994 Chevy truck with the cross member?" "Is there a special tool or trick?" Option six... Go to a Jiffy Lube or some such place and let them worry about it... Ask the price first. Good luck, please post what works best. NEW ANSWER: You don't have to do any of that stuff. Just get a 1/4 inch drive socket and it will fit right on the back bolts of the transmission pan and remove them. Then tilt pan foreward and it will come right out. It's no big job what so ever. Easy.

Just look at the transmission and see what needs to come off. First, start with the drive shaft, then the transfer case, and then the front cross member holding up the front axle (or shift on the fly hub locker). Tie up the transfer case to the cross member that is right behind it because at this time you can not take it out. You can leave the locking hub in place. The reason for taking the cross member down is to get the front drive shaft out. Next, take off the starter due to the fact the starter bolts go through the transmission bell housing. Right now you should be looking at a bare transmission mounted to the engine block and a cross member supporting the transmission. Next get a transmission jack to support the rear of the transmission before you start to remove the cross member bolts. After the cross member is out and the transmission is supported, crack every bolt but don't take them out. Start by taking out the hardest to get at bolts first and work your way around. Lleave in one bolt on each side of the transmission bell housing until you are ready to drop the transmission out of the truck. Make sure all the wires are disconnected from each side. There are 3 plugs and you need to disconnect the shifter cable and the 4x4 shifter rod. If you have an electronic 4x4 then there is one more plug. The transmission should just drop out and the torque converter will still be attached to the flywheel. There is a wrench that will fit the end of the converter. Be careful not to strip the nuts on the back of the flywheel, between the engine block and flywheel because if you do it isn't going to come off.
