You do not indicate what year your Corvette is, however most engine numbers on GM products are located on the top edge of the engine block on a little ledge in front of the passenger side engine head. The answer to your question is YES you DO have to remove something on the newer models, but on most pre-1984 models it can easily be seen with a flashlight and a cleaning rag.
