You can change the ignition cylinder on your 1999 Mercury Mystique by removing the retaining ring at the top of the ignition cylinder. The ignition cylinder will slide out. Remove the wiring harness.

The ignition timing for the Mystique, Contour, and new age Cougar are controlled by the Powertrain Control Module (PCM), and are not adjustable by the typical shade tree mechanic.
take it to a mechanic for a diagnostic DO NOT CUT ANYTHING try changing the oc sensors that worked for me
Hey there, I'm looking at the service manual for Contour/Mystique right now and it says the automatics have a separate ignition control module and the ignition control module for standard transmissions are fully incorporated into the vehicle computer. You mean your after market manual. There is no module in a 1997, auto trans or stick. My crank sensor was getting no voltage to it and i spent a day looking for that module, come to find the wires that connect to the sensor go directly to the computor. Im sure there is a module in one of the years the manual covers for auto trans but not a 1997 2.0 contour/mystique.
I had the same problem on my 1996 Pontiac firebird, they told me that my ignition cylinder had went out. Maybe you could ask about that, I don't know what would cause that to go out though? I had a similar problem 1998 Mystique LS. It was a burnt out relay. Also the ignition switch (what the key turns on...I'm not a mechanic I think that is what it was called) was worn and I had to replace switch.
Ignition switch may be defective.
No. The chipped ignition key did not start until the 1998 model year and was only on the 6 cylinder Contour and Mystique. (I've got a '97 6 cylinder Contour that seems to have a chip in the key.)
It is the movies anything can happen regardless of previous events
