The efficiency of the combustion inside the woodstove depends on the temperature and the dryness of the wood.
By controlling the rate at which air and fuel mix you can control rate of burn.
A well-insulated flue may be useful in managing the rate of burn.
I would STRONGLY disagree with the above answer. As a former chimney sweep with ten years + experience I find that most wood stoves when operating a peak efficency create more heat than is desired. This causes people to close down dampers to reduce airflow therby lowering the burn temperature. It is at these lower temps that creasote builds up in the chimney which is what leads to flue fires. With out the protection of a clay or steel liner the only thing separating the fire from your house is a single layer of brick and mortor that are not designed for these temperatures. The brick and mortor will literaly explode allowing the fire to reach the interior walls of your house and put you and your family in danger. If you do decide to use a free standing wood stove or fireplace insert without a proper liner PLEASE if the room get to hot open a door or window instead of shutting down the dampers. The use of an anti-creasote product helps this problem but you should have your chimney swept by a trained professional after every cord of wood burned.

This would not be a good project for the average homeowner. That lintel is supporting the weight of the chimney above it. To remove and install a new lintel will require temprary support of the chimney on that side. Failing to do that can result in cracks, or even collapse of the chimney.

It will not work very well. Many days when you open the door the smoke will come out the door. You can purchase a reducer to make it work, but if there is any possible way to install the 8 inch pipe, I would recommend it. I sell stoves in BC. Codes here dictate that you can only step down the flue size by 1 inch. Make sure you check with your insurance company. They will look for anything to void your coverage if there is a fire. I agree with the fellow above: put in an 8" chimney or get a stove with a 6" collar.
How does a fire damper work?

Can a pellet stove insert be used in a gas fireplace?
No they cant. Pellets need a chimney for smoke and gas fireplaces have no chimney.

This is probably going to require building permits and inspections- would hire a chimney specialist to do this. Refitting will inolve removing old fireplace, and installing new. Building Code may not allow you to connect wood stove to pre-fab fireplace- the stovepipe needs to be connected directly to the chimney. Please discuss work planned with a legitimate chimney contractor- you may change your mind on some of it.

The "Franklin stove" (not "Benjamin Franklin stove") was named after its inventor, Benjamin Franklin, who would never have thought of putting a statue of himself on it. The Franklin stove is actually a metal fireplace liner that allowed a fire in the fireplace to heat a room more efficiently. It contained a hollow "baffle", a wide, thin iron box near (but not at) the rear. The baffle was open at the bottom and contained two holes on the sides. Heat from the fire rose on both the back and front of the baffle, so that air entering at the bottom of the box was more quickly heated. Heated air rises, but instead of escaping out the top of the chimney to no purpose, in the Franklin stove, the heated air exited into the room through the holes in the baffle's sides.

Mainly creosote, which is released from the wood as a vapour during burning which then condenses on the inside of your chimney or flue liner. The cooler the chimney, the worse the problem, so burning your stove turned right down will speed up this build-up. Similarly, burning unseasoned wood or certain species like pine & cypress can speed up this process. The cure is to sweep the chimney regularly and burn your stove hot from time to time. If you dont, one day the build-up can catch fire within your chimney. Lining the chimney with a stainless steel flue liner to increase the speed of gases up the chimney (preferably insulated liner to further reduce heat loss) also reduces the problem.
