You don't need a passport to travel anywhere within the United States. California and Texas are both U.S. states. So no, you don't need a passport.
However, those who travel by car or bus will be stopped at many Immigration checkpoints along the way and will have their citizenship challenged by DHS officials. People who "look Mexican" are given close scrutiny.

A passport is required in order to cross international boundaries. In other words,
from one country to another. No special document is required for unlimited travel
anywhere within the USA (although you do need to identify yourself if you want to
get on an airplane).
