The first step in deploying wireless broadband is to get broadband service to your location. Broadband service is delivered by an ISP--internet service provider--and can come to your home or place of business in different ways. The phone line is just one of many options today: * via a telephone line (DSL) * via the TV cable * via satellite * via a T-1 or T-3 dedicated circuit * via cellular wireless. Every one of these services will (or can*) terminate in a device that will provide one or more network ports, usually RJ-45 type. The high-speed network is available at that port, into which you can plug a computer, a router, a switch, other networked equipment, or a wireless router. The wireless router will have several network ports into which you can direct-connect networked devices (PCs, printers, VOIP devices, etc.). Plus the wireless router is your wireless access point, capable of communicating Ethernet traffic wirelessly to over a hundred different devices. Each device of course needs a wireless adapter to uphold its end of the communication and must be within range of the wireless router. ∙ 14y agoNo. Cable internet is considered broadband, and no phone is required. In fact, many cable companies offer phone service over your broadband connection. DSL is also broadband, which is usually purchased through your phone company. They will likely tell you you have to have a phone, but normally this is a lie. They have what is called 'naked DSL' which you sometimes have to escalate to a supervisor before they will give it to you.
You do need an active phone line to receive cable or broadband internet. If you only landline services to receive the cable internet, you can simple ask for a basic plan, which should cost around $9.99 a month. Wi-Fi, or wireless internet, is one form of internet service you do not need a phone or cable line to receive.

No, DSL can use the same phone line as your house phone. The reason for this is that DSL operates in a different frequency band than normal phone transmissions.

They are separate systems in your phone line. The DSL is a digital signal that has nothing to do with the analog phone signal. The bandwidth of a phone line is large enough to handle both with no issues.

Most POS machines these days can still use phone connections but also accept DSL.

A DSL line requires phone service in the house. A cable modem does not as it uses the cable t.v. lines. Once you have Internet access at home, you connect a wireless router to extend the service to the entire house. That's not exactly accurate. You need a line to the house from the phone company, but you don't have to have phone service, you can have stand alone DSL service.
