Wired Broadband Data Access

Wired broadband data access requires a wired connection between a data server and the internet. A Digital Subscriber Line (DSL) utilizes the local telephone network to provide high-speed data transfers while a dial-up connection provides slower data transfer speed.

How do you hook up a DSL connection to your computer?

the actual physical connection is simple, almost every DSL provider will sell/lease you a modem, and probably install it, either free or for a price. The DSL modem connects either to your phone line, a fiber optic line (if your in a large city) or most commonly a coaxal line, just like your tv. That modem, also connected to the power outlet, is then connected to your computer via a jumper Ethernet line, commonly Cat5e.

You could also connect a router to the modem instead, and then connect your computer to the router via another Cat5e line, or Wifi. This is only required when you are connecting many computers to the same internet connection, or when you really need Wifi for a laptop or remote computer.

What did the internet do for us?

It has given us more time and location insensitive communication, purchasing, finance management, work, and information gathering. Plus greater access to pooled knowledge and increasingly tailored services and products.

However, the internet has not completely ruled out the relevance of time and location. While we can now receive and respond to messages from friends and family regardless of where and what they're doing, there are still many things we can only read on paper, like old books. We now have better access to pooled knowledge. Think a pair of ski boots look awesome? Well now through websites like Amazon.com you can find out if they are as awesome as they look by reading what actually owners of the boots think. This type of public feedback is forcing companies to provide us with better products.

While we can order shoes online we have not yet perfected the service of ensuring the shoes are a good fit. Somethings still require us to be there in person.

Specific services include:

  • Internet banking (no longer need to be there in person or call during business hours to change something with your bank account)
  • Online purchasing (no longer need to be there in person or call during business hours to purchase something)
  • Increased pooled knowledge (no longer dependent on a friend or relative telling you if something is good)
  • More and better products (as customers can better communicate their needs companies can now better tailor products and recognize demand for the creation of new products)
  • Time insensitive communication (email, Facebook)
  • Interests shaped newsfeeds (you no longer need to skim newspapers to find stories that interests you. Now you can tell Google to send you stories that match you specified interests)
  • Speeder access to information (Google search engine)

Why would cable Internet be slower than dial-up?

Cable Slower than Dialup1)One reason why the cable could be so much slower is that a system that old is probably using an ISA bus and slower serial connections for the modem.

I have a system with about the same specs that I use for testing other systems and various maintence. It is hooked up to a network via a 10mbs NIC and is slightly slower on DSL as brand new computers.

If it is possible, you might want to consider switching from cable to DSL Internet access. It will be faster and will still not tie up your phoneline.

2)With the computer you are using, I suspect it can't handle the bandwidth your Cable Provider is sending. Traditionally, a dial up connection sends data in 'unit' size of 576. (Think of baking, a sifter can only handle 576 units at a time.) Now when you go broadband, the unit size is now 1472 or 1500. Which means the network card you have, is overloaded as soon as you turn on your computer, because the Main board on that type of system, was never designed for broad band connections. ALso, when using a modem, the computer has the capacity to use the smaller demands of it, and broadband places HUGE demands on computer systems. Typically, when you click on Internet Explorer, there are around 10 different things happening all at the same time, which, in turn, makes everything slow. 3)When my ISP, Comcast, released their 3mbps speed increase I learned a valuable lesson about cable Internet. To achieve maximum bandwidth you cannot have more than one (the main) splitter in between your cable modem and the main cable line coming into your house. Just one extra splitter cost me 50% in terms of download speed. Once the splitter was removed my perfomance increased dramatically. Extremely poor performance, such as this example, could have been caused by poor cable signal, other interference, or too many splitters. I've had the best dsl available, and under equal conditions, standard cable beats dsl and dial up every time. 4)Even an older computer, like that 166 MHz Pentium rig, can handle a few megabytes/second worth of Ethernet bandwidth.

Your cable modem relies on some rather advanced electronics and signalling to get its throughput. The protocols it uses to pass messages allow for retrying transmissions over some errors, and for some downshifting in case the signals aren't being sent or received well.

Your cable modem is probably getting a very marginal signal and sending or receiving data very slowly becasue it has to retry transmissions, re-establish its link with the device it is talking to, and frequently retry transmission.

The poor signal can be caused by a lot of different things. Perhaps there are too many devices connected to the same cable, or you have some poor cabling in your house. It might be that the signal arriving at your house is poor, as well. Even if you have a television video signal that's good enough to watch, the cable modem might be only able to transmit or receive a marginal signal.

Trying to fix the issue yourself means learning more about your cable modem and its built in software, or buying (or borrowing) another one to test as a replacement.

But why not have the cable company come back and double-check your signal strength and installation?

5)

Most likely a bad cable modem. Call your cable modem provider and ask for a replacement.

How can you connect both ADSL and cable?

This answer is really dependant on your use. the first answer is clearly easiest if you have only one computer.

It doesn't matter. You could connect one USB & one Ethernet, Both Ethernet, Both USB. They have nothing to do with each other so they can be connected however you like.

---

If you have more than one device (Most of us do. PC, Xbox, Wii, BlueRay Player, Server, Iphone, Etc...) you will need to utilize an appliance. These appliances use Ethernet, and can only use one connection at a time. it is designed for fail-over. Another appliance can load balance but a single stream goes out a single connection and you can not exceeded the bandwidth of a single connection because your source ip needs to be the same. These provide a level of redundancy for traffic requests from inside the network.

There is minimal or no redundancy if you have an internal resource you need to access from remote.

What wires do you need to run from your outside phonebox to your phone jack to connect dsl?

You do not need to run any wires. DSL connects directly to the phone jack. You run phone line from the phone jack to a filter, then to the DSL Modem. You can also install a filter at the interface to eliminate the need for filters inside the home. If you install interior filters, you will need one at each phone jack that is being used by any device. From the modem you can either run USB or Ethernet cable to the computer if the modem is a USB/Ethernet modem. I do not recommend USB. Use the Ethernet if at all possible. The connection is more stable and slightly faster. If your computer has no Ethernet connection, you can install an Ethernet card for as little as $20. Use a good quality Cat5 or Cat6 cable from the Modem to the computer.

Can I replace my adsl modem with a modem router?

Yes you can because the modem router has a modem built in. There are different types of modem routers that suit different needs. If you are only going to be surfing the web you will need a "N" modem router, if you are going to be sharing files then you will need a "N+" modem router and if you are going to be gaming e.g. connecting to a Xbox 360 or PlayStaion 3 you will need a "N+N" modem router, I would personally recommend Belkin modem routers. Hope you find this useful!

Can you hook up a dsl modem if you are using a device which plugs into the phone jack to connect a computer in another room to the internet?

What is this 'device' you are referring to? Are you using your phone lines in your house to run a network? If so, then no, it will be almost impossible to run a DSL modem to that network.

The reason is, a phone line network, which typically runs at 1mb per second, uses 'token ring' methology... basically one computer holds the 'token' and the other computers are constantly asking for it, and it travels ONE direction, not 2 way communication.

For the price, I would install network cards in all your computers, and run CAT5 cable, with a router near your DSL Modem. that way, the DSL modem will see one computer, but all the computers, attached to the router via CAT5 cable, will be able to access the internet.

Do you need phone service for DSL?

You need a phone line. Depending on the policies of the service providers in your area, you may or may not be able to buy DSL service without also purchasing the provider's voice service as well. The best thing to do is to search for DSL providers in your area and check their websites for information. You can also look at a consumer site such as www.epinions.com for evaluations by customers.

Is wireless slower than wired if it comes from the same router from the same adsl connection?

Normally, yes.

The max speed of the most common wireless standard, 802.11g, is about 54 Mbps while the router will support wired transfer speeds of 100 Mbps or 1000 Mbps (Gigabit network).

Your internet connection is slower than either of those, broadband internet is in the range 1-10 Mbps, so you won't notice if you use the wireless just for browsing.

The speed difference between wired and wireless is definitely noticeable when you copy files between two computers on the local network.

Why does TiVo need a phone line?

The TiVo DVR connects to the TiVo service every 24 to 48 hours to download your program information. It will usually do a download during a pre-set time and only takes a few minutes. A phone line is also necessary during the TiVo Guided Setup, which connects and establishes your TiVo service. If the nearest phone jack is in an inconvenient location, you don

Are 277V lights wired the same as 120V?

The connection diagram is the same, one hot-leg and one neutral. But if you do not have 277 volts as your source voltage, connecting a 277 volt light (usually a ballast) to 120 volt will not work. Conversely, if you hook up a 120 volt light or appliance to 277 volts, it will quickly become toast.

Do you need a separate phone line for a fax?

No you don't need a separate line for fax machine, you can use a multi jack and use both telephone and fax on the same jack and programme the line in such a way that if you are not picking the phone in 4 or 5 rings it goes to the fax machine.

however if you want a separate number for the fax machine on the same telephone line you have a feature called I dent a call (distinctive ring)where in its a virtual number and you can select different rings for the phone and fax and the fax machine would identify if its a phone call or incoming fax.

How do you network two computers in different rooms and have them sharing an ADSL Broadband connection?

You need to buy an adsl router. Connect your modem to the router then connect your two computers using rj45 (ethernet) cables or usb. Some routers need to be a modem router which renders your broadband router useless. Some broadband companies require you to register every PC used on the network sharing the internet.

And sometimes you can get a wireless router but it takes a while to install.

Is peoplepc DSL compatible with wireless router?

Yes. You must first make sure your DSL modem is just a modem not a modem and a router. Then you must setup your DSL modem in "bridged mode". Next log into your router and change it from DHCP to PPPoE and enter your DSL username and password in the proper fields. All will work well from that point on.

Why does Comcast say DSL is slower when Qwest has 7 Mbps service?

It is advertising. They will do or say anything to make it seem like their product is better. If you look at the fine print, it will probably say something like "...when compared to Qwest DSL 1.5Mb speed." It should be noted though that Qwest does not offer the 7Mb speed in all areas.

How do you charge your cell phone with no charger?

Answer

They have these new things that are portable disposeable chargers. Try that.

AnswerBuy a portable power supply/battery, for example the "Chargeit" for about $30, then use your phone's cigarette lighter charger, and plug it into the "chargeit". Recharge the Chargeit when driving your car.

Answer

Another way is to connect your cell phone to your laptop it'll share batteries 1.take any old usb cable and cut the end that doesn't plug into the computer

2.strip it and you should find four wires

3. find the red and black wires

4.strip those

5.now take out your cell phone battery and find where it says (+) and (-) dont worry about the (T) its a temperature sensor for charging.

6.now take the wires the red is (+) and the black is (-) and touch them to the (+) and (-) parts in the back of the phone and put in the battery so the wires are sandwiched between the phone and the battery

7. now plug in usb cable to a computer and let it charge for about 5-10 mins dont over charge it

8. you should be fine.
