Wired Broadband Data Access

Wired broadband data access requires a wired connection between a data server and the internet. A Digital Subscriber Line (DSL) utilizes the local telephone network to provide high-speed data transfers while a dial-up connection provides slower data transfer speed.

What is the maximum throughput of ADSL?

User Avatar

Asked by Wiki User

Your top adsl speed is based up on different of factors.

Some of them are:

  • Distance between your local dslam and your router
  • Quality of your telephone line
  • Quality of your router
  • Using wifi access or not(since wifi is slower than using old fashioned cords)
  • Even your PC overall perfomance can increase or decrease your adsl speed(download or upload) since PC's with low ram capability or slow hard disk drives tend to give a bad influence to your maximum download adsl speed.

What equipment is needed to hook up DSL to a computer with Windows XP?

User Avatar

Asked by Wiki User

A modem, which you normally get from the DSL provider, is really the only thing you need (apart from a computer).

But it is recommended to get a home router/firewall as well, it gives basic protection against computer attacks from the internet and lets you hook up a second computer to the same DSL connection.

DSL refers to a type of connection and broadband refers to an internet service. You can purchase a modem and a router independently, however many internet service providers prefer to provide you with one.

Why does your isp need to know the mac address of your cable modem or dsl modem?

User Avatar

Asked by Wiki User

The MAC address (Media Access Control) is used to identify a specific piece of network hardware, such as a network interface card (NIC), a router or a modem. Since your ISP will only wish to allow Internet access to paying customers, it can check the MAC address of your router against its list to see if it belongs to a valid customer. If you change your equipment, typically, your ISP will provide you with a process to register the new hardware's MAC address with them.

What are two disadvantages of using a satellite connection instead of DSL?

User Avatar

Asked by Wiki User

There used to be the disadvantage of requiring phone service to a phone line before acquiring DSL services, however that is no longer a prerequisite for most carriers. The current challenge for DSL is the last mile of service which requires a close proximity to the carrier premises for signaling to be proficient enough for high speed Internet access. Typically, the further from the fiber optic network, the weaker the signals. Most last mile connections run over copper wire and can be too far from that fiber optic line for decent connectivity.

How is dsl connectivity difference dial up?

User Avatar

Asked by Wiki User

Dial up uses audio frequency tones to deliver data. 0 to 4000 Hertz

DSL uses higher frequencies in to deliver more data. 25,000 - 1,000,000's Hertz.

A low pass filter separates Audio frequency from the digital information.

DSL contains many subsets includes ADSL1, ADSL2, ADSL2+, VDSL and VDSL2.

DSL speed is also dependant on distance from the phone exchange and quality of the copper lines + connections to the premises.

DSL speed is also much lower when the cables are under water.

How is dsl affected?

User Avatar

Asked by Wiki User

A number of factors can affect your bandwidth.

  • The distance between your home and the ISP central office. The DSL signal has to travel over copper phone lines and can degrade at long distances, preventing your DSL connection from operating at its maximum possible speed.
  • The number of users sharing your DSL connection. Many users in your neighborhood will generally share a connection from the DSL central office to a fiber internet backbone. At peak hours during the day, you will all be sharing that line and you can see your bandwidth decrease on average. This is probably the number-one biggest cause of a slowdown.
  • Any additional hops beyond the DSL modem. If you have a router (wireless or otherwise) that share your DSL connection with multiple users, then your available bandwidth will be shared between those computers/users. Try password-protecting your wireless LAN and decreasing the number of hops between your device and the DSL router.
  • Naturally, any bandwidth caps that your ISP might impose. Your ISP will often offer tiered service plans to its users to encourage them to pay more for more bandwidth.
  • And finally, any other internet applications that might be running on your device will also share your bandwidth, say, if you were streaming music or using a BitTorrent client in the background when trying to stream video online.

You can properly test your bandwidth by heading on over to speedtest.net and running a test. Try doing this several times and during off-peak and peak traffic hours for where you live and you'll see a huge difference in your speeds.

What are the uses of multimedia technology?

User Avatar

Asked by Wiki User

Basic multimedia communication technology tends to cover a range of multimedia devices, such as sound cards and graphic cards that allow users to create visual presentations that output sound and /or images. Multimedia generally means the combination of two or more continuous media. The two media are normally audio and video, sound plus moving pictures. For example the digital camera may be used externally to the PC, and allows the user to record images. When connecting the camera to the computer, using a cord, images will be formatted and printed. Various computers have sound cards stored within them, this allows output of sound from speakers through the use of CD's, and other formats that may have music attached to it. Sound cards allow individuals to listen to music played or stored on their computer. Whereas Communications technology refers to the transmission of data from one computer to another from one device to another. Computer systems refer to an entire working computer. All computer systems consist of various components they include the case of the computer the power supply and many other components. The Motherboard in a computer that manages the communication and function of all information. The Processor is another term for (CPU) Control Panel Unit. A microprocessor chip, the CPU is the brain of the computer; it uses mathematical functions to perform calculations. Random Access Memory Also referred to as the (RAM) holds the application programs and data in current use, it may also be occupied by software as operating systems and interpreters. Computer systems also include a Bus, the Hard Drive which has encoding data on the hard drive there has been two approaches firstly being the MFM, and the next being RLL. Other components include Peripherals, Monitor, Keyboard, and various Pointed Devices including Joysticks. Computer Networks Computer networks are able to achieve communication between a couple of computers. Networks are split into three parts. Local Area Network A Local Area Network is also known as a (LAN) they are privately owned networks within a single building or campus. LANs are distinguished from other kinds of networks by three characteristics (1) their size, (2) their transmission technology, and (3) their topology. Hub This is a LAN device that broadcasts the information it receives to all attached devices and segments of the network. Bridge This limits the collision domain, can extend network distances, and can also filter packets on their MAC addresses and ease congestion. Router These have two functions firstly to determine the best path to a destination and to share path information the "route" with other routes. A router can also connect networks using different media and architectures, which enable them to determine the best path for a packet to reach another network. They can also filter broadcasts. Network Interface Card The Network Interface Card allows devices to connect to the network. They provide connections for any type of networking media, including wireless media. Internal hardware installed within computer amongst other devices that allow them to communicate on a network. Metropolitan Area Network This is constructed of LANs that are interconnected across a city or metropolitan area. An example of a MAN is the cable television network available in many cities. MANs require routers, telephone and ATM switches, and microwave antennas. They produce single points of connection between each LAN. ATM Switch A network device which is used by telecommunications companies like the local telephone company to support multiple connections on an ATM network. Wide Area Network This is also referred to as a (WAN) Two or more LANs or MANs, which are interconnected using slow-speed connections over telephone lines.

Modem A modem is a device used by telecommunications companies like the local telephone company to support multiple connections on an ATM network.

Do you need long distance service for DSL?

User Avatar

Asked by Wiki User

Yes, if the fax is being sent to a long distance number. You dial a fax number on a fax machine exactly the same way that you would dial the same telephone number on a landline telephone at the same location. If the phone line you have the fax machine connected to cannot call long distance, then the fax machine will not be able to send a fax to a number outside your local calling area.

How fast is dsl?

User Avatar

Asked by Wiki User

DSL is much faster than regular dial-up, however, it is slower than Cable internet. Regardless it is definitely one of the quicker ways to surf the net.

The real difference between dial-up and DSL is the fact that DSL is faster and doesn't hold up the telephone line unlike dial-up.

Cable on the other hand is much faster than DSL and dial-up, using fiber-optic cables, able to pull of tremendous speed without the use of a telephone all completely!

How do you stop hackers from getting into your network from DSL cable side?

User Avatar

Asked by Wiki User

It dependens on what kind of a router you have. But the basic technique is to turn the firewall in your router, and change the administrator password. If it didn't help to turn on ip-filtering it will help immedeately but requires time if you have many computers connected to your router which you don't want to block. You have to block Ips of hackers and make a blocking rule or add all your friends Ips and make a rule allowing only described Ips.
