the actual physical connection is simple, almost every DSL provider will sell/lease you a modem, and probably install it, either free or for a price. The DSL modem connects either to your phone line, a fiber optic line (if your in a large city) or most commonly a coaxal line, just like your tv. That modem, also connected to the power outlet, is then connected to your computer via a jumper Ethernet line, commonly Cat5e.
You could also connect a router to the modem instead, and then connect your computer to the router via another Cat5e line, or Wifi. This is only required when you are connecting many computers to the same internet connection, or when you really need Wifi for a laptop or remote computer.

I've had the best dsl available, and under equal conditions, standard cable beats dsl and dial up every time. 4)Even an older computer, like that 166 MHz Pentium rig, can handle a few megabytes/second worth of Ethernet bandwidth.
Your cable modem relies on some rather advanced electronics and signalling to get its throughput. The protocols it uses to pass messages allow for retrying transmissions over some errors, and for some downshifting in case the signals aren't being sent or received well.
Your cable modem is probably getting a very marginal signal and sending or receiving data very slowly becasue it has to retry transmissions, re-establish its link with the device it is talking to, and frequently retry transmission.
The poor signal can be caused by a lot of different things. Perhaps there are too many devices connected to the same cable, or you have some poor cabling in your house. It might be that the signal arriving at your house is poor, as well. Even if you have a television video signal that's good enough to watch, the cable modem might be only able to transmit or receive a marginal signal.
Trying to fix the issue yourself means learning more about your cable modem and its built in software, or buying (or borrowing) another one to test as a replacement.

If you have more than one device (Most of us do. PC, Xbox, Wii, BlueRay Player, Server, Iphone, Etc...) you will need to utilize an appliance. These appliances use Ethernet, and can only use one connection at a time. it is designed for fail-over. Another appliance can load balance but a single stream goes out a single connection and you can not exceeded the bandwidth of a single connection because your source ip needs to be the same. These provide a level of redundancy for traffic requests from inside the network.
There is minimal or no redundancy if you have an internal resource you need to access from remote.

Use a 1 to 2 phone jack splitter and then a filter on your DSL jack.
You do not need to run any wires. DSL connects directly to the phone jack. You run phone line from the phone jack to a filter, then to the DSL Modem. You can also install a filter at the interface to eliminate the need for filters inside the home. If you install interior filters, you will need one at each phone jack that is being used by any device. From the modem you can either run USB or Ethernet cable to the computer if the modem is a USB/Ethernet modem. I do not recommend USB. Use the Ethernet if at all possible. The connection is more stable and slightly faster. If your computer has no Ethernet connection, you can install an Ethernet card for as little as $20. Use a good quality Cat5 or Cat6 cable from the Modem to the computer.
Yes you can because the modem router has a modem built in. There are different types of modem routers that suit different needs. If you are only going to be surfing the web you will need a "N" modem router, if you are going to be sharing files then you will need a "N+" modem router and if you are going to be gaming e.g. connecting to a Xbox 360 or PlayStaion 3 you will need a "N+N" modem router, I would personally recommend Belkin modem routers. What is this 'device' you are referring to? Are you using your phone lines in your house to run a network? If so, then no, it will be almost impossible to run a DSL modem to that network.
The reason is, a phone line network, which typically runs at 1mb per second, uses 'token ring' methology... basically one computer holds the 'token' and the other computers are constantly asking for it, and it travels ONE direction, not 2 way communication.
