Yes, it takes a special socket. I borrowed one from a local Olds, Buick dealer. You can purchase one, but it is about fifty bucks. The socket lets you turn the pump about a quarter turn to remove and the reverse to install. Not hard if you are mechanicly inclined.

On my 1998 Aurora with a 4.0L V8, the water pump is on the driver's side of the engine. It is right at the top of the engine.

You will need to remove the water from your 2001 Buick Aurora cooling system. Remove the water pump return hose. Remove the water pump retaining bolts. Reverse the process to install the new water pump.
If your 1995 Oldsmobile Aurora keeps overheating and the issue is not the thermostat or the water pump, it could be the cooling fan. It might also be the radiator (leaking) or the hoses between the engine and radiator, or the shroud could be clogged or damaged.
with special tool about 1hr.
10mm socket. May want to go with the longer socket. A bit of a squeeze either way. It's called a water pump socket. It costs as much as the water pump itself.

Remove the serpentine belt and the altenator. The water pump is behind the alternator. Make sure to drain the antifreeze.
The water pump is actually called a impeller and is located in a pump housing where the bottom radiator hose connects. You will need a special socket tool to remove the impeller once inside the housing.
