Yes you do. The tool is sold at Autozone and is called a brake caliper tool. It looks like a metal box frame with tabs sticking off of it. You will use the tool to turn the caliper piston clockwise back into the piston. It is mounted on an internal screw. I found this out firsthand when I couldn't compress the piston with my c-clamp like most brake jobs I've done in the past and ultimately had to buy a rebuilt caliper.


There is a special tool but it is not needed. All you need is a large flat head screw driver. You will be able to rotate the piston by placing the flat head screw driver into 1 of the slots and turning it. The special tool fits all 4 slots to rotate the piston so your pads can clear the rotor but a screw driver will work just fine. This is what I did to complete my rear brake job.
