The use of fish bowls is cruel. Because of ignorance and lack of knowledge it was an acceptable container for a fish to be kept in during the 18th and 19th centuries but in these enlightened days there is no excuse for not knowing how cruel it is to keep a fish in such a tiny container. The basic rules for keeping any kind of fish are :- 1 inch of fish needs a minimum of 1 gallon of water. Every tank needs a permanently running filter. :- Every tank needs to have at least 50% of its water changed every week. Fail to observe and keep any of those basic needs of fish and I can guarantee that it is only a matter of time before you have health problems with your fish.

How much is a small fish bowl?

The price of a small fish bowl is about $24.99! A small fish bowl with nothing in it that holds a gallon of water, costs about $6-$10. You can get them at PetSmart or Walmart. Betta fish don't need a filter but other fish do. So, that will add on to the price of the bowl. Most people like to put something in the bowl, again, that will cost you extra. So, it really depends on how much you want or need in the bowl.

How much room does a betta fish need?

For the best health and lifespan of a betta, you should consider something that is at least 2.5 to 5 gallons and can have a small heater (bettas need a water temp of 78F to 80F), and a low flowing filter on it whether that be a small internal filter, or a small HOB (Hang On Back).

Is a filter good on a fish bowl?

it is always good to get some kind of filter for your fish, but natural ponds dont' always need one. the filters will keep out some bad bacteria though, and keep your fish healthy longer, and allow you to actually see them. goldfish are very hardy and can withstand quite a bit.

Is a small betta fish bowl good for goldfish?

A small fish bowl is bad for any fish. You need minimal 5 gallon for a single betta. You need minimal 20~30 gallon for a single fancy goldfish, 40~55 gallon for a single common goldfish. Because fish produce ammonia and it is toxic to themselves. Goldfish has such large body mass, so they produce enormous amount of ammonia. You must have a good filter system, and do a nitrogen cycle first before adding any fish at all.

Do you need an filter in a 1.5 Gallon fish bowl?

Yes, every fish tank should have a filter, but depending on the kind of fish it can be exempt. If not an air bubbler is a good idea. The filter cleans the tank, along with putting oxygen in the water, and the air bubbler also puts necessary oxygen into the water.

Will the baby fish live in bowl without a filter if yes for how long?

guppy fry can live in a bowl without a filter, but you will need to net them up and completely clean out the bowl every second day. they also will need a heater, not negotiable! keep the water at 26-27*c (78-80*f) and prevent temperature fluctuations. they can survive in there for one month maximum before they get too big. this is just one example. you will need to specify what type of fish it is to get an accurate answer.

Why do you need to filter ammonia?

Ammonia is your fishes urine, The small it gives of is terrible and it stresses your fish. It also makes your water dirtier.

Why does your fish prefer a bowl?

It doesn't. A fish tank is a far, far better home for a fish than a bowl and here's why: * A fish bowl has a small surface area in relation to the amount of water in it. This reduces oxygen diffusion, so the fish finds it difficult to breathe. * A fish bowl distorts the fish, so it's harder to see it clearly. It also distorts the fish's view of the outside world. * It's virtually impossible to place either a heater or a filter in a fish bowl. Bettas (the most popular fish for bowls) NEED HEATERS or they will have a greatly reduced lifespan and a lot of health issues. If you must have a fish in an unheated bowl choose a paradise fish. Filters greatly improve the health and quality of life of fish, and without one you should be doing 50-60% water changes twice weekly. A five gallon tank (or even a three gallon tank) would make a huge, huge difference to the happiness of your fish, and they aren't very expensive. They are small enough to fit just about everywhere - on a desk, next to the microwave, on the bathroom cabinet, the possibilities are endless. Almost anybody can find somewhere to fit in a three to five gallon tank, even in a dorm room or small apartment - most of them will fit wherever a fish bowl will.
