In proper alphabetization canvas would come before canvass.
Pre-stretched canvas comes in a variety of sizes. Despite that, you're limited to the sizes that the manufacturer's make. When you stretch your own canvas, you have the luxury of making the frame as large, small or irregular as you want. Price is going to be comparible either way so, if you're just doing a standard size painting, I say save yourself the trouble and just buy a prestretched frame but, if you're working on a custom piece, then stretching canvas yourself is the way to go.
