This involves removing the old timing belt and replacing with the new one. Removing the old belt entails removal of the MAT sensor connector, the air cleaner and its hose and the right front wheel. One may then install the new belt, making sure to tighten the automatic tension bolt to 18 ft. lbs. After this is done, the front timing belt cover needs to be screwed back on.

It's highly likely that the valves and piston have touched, as with most modern 16v engines. I'd replace the timing belt, then try turning it over by hand, if that works see if it will start. It is however unlikely to start, so it will then require the cylinder head removing to replace the damaged valves. Check everything in the timing belt area; tensioner, idler, water pump etc, as damage or failure of any of these could have caused the timing belt to break

http://www.kick-fix.com/ see timing belt section. for both motors , 8v and 16v. It is a pretty big job and if you want to tackle it I suggest you get a manual from a parts store for about $18 and it will have pictures and everything. You also will have it for the next repair. Good luck.

Tighten the water pump screws slightly.Turn the engine by the crankshaft gear bolt 720° to fully seat the belt into the gear teeth.Turn the water pump eccentric counterclockwise until the hole in the tensioner arm is aligned with the hole in the base.Tighten the water pump screws to 18 ft. lbs. (24 Nm), while checking that the tensioner holes remain as adjusted in the prior step.Install the crankshaft pulley, timing belt cover and the serpentine drive belt.

There existent several important timing marks: 1. On the engine, specifically, on the plastic timing belt cover next to crank pulley. If the timing belt cover has never been taken off, in order to see this mark, spray the general area with Engine Brite and hose off immediately to prevent damage to accessory belts. 2. On the crank pulley itself: a red mark (14 deg), and a white mark (18 deg). Again, you may need to wash the grease/dirt from the top of the pulley in order to see these marks with the timing gun. 3. Don't forget to jumper the two-wire service plug under the dash before checking/adjusting the timing. - IB
