both the 2.5l 4cyl and the 4.0 6cyl have a chain and most people dont replace them unless they are making noise i have had many jeeps and have never replaced one and all my jeeps have had between 100 and 200k on them

The timing belt is not a belt on a Cherokee sport. It's a chain. It's located under a housing on the crank shaft. In order to replace it you will need to remove the alternator, the water pump, the a/c compressor, the radiator and the engine fans. An experienced mechanic can get it done in about 3 to 6 hours.
Check the oxygen sensor. My 1995 Grand Cherokee stopped stalling while driving after it was replaced.
