It doesn't have a knock sensor on the 4.0 L OHV in a 1993 Ranger ( my 1995 Ford Explorer 4.0 L OHV engine doesn't have a knock sensor either )

Yes, there is a knock sensor on the 2.3L. It is located on the rear driver's side of the cylinder head.
The knock sensor is on the side of the Escort engine block. It is located close to the oil sensor.
