I dont think a sim card can wear out.

Actually, some older model sim cards were found to have a vulnerability once 3G hit the air. As the sim hands off connection back and forth between 2G and 3G coverage, it runs through a finite number of possible connections. While this finite number is something akin to 999999, over the course of time-depending on your phone , coverage area, and movement throughout coverage, an older sim can effectively burn itself out.

Network providers now offer what is called a UICC sim card which was re-engineered to handle the multiple hand-offs required by 3G capable networks. These sims are typically provided free of charge to authorized account holders.

No. If your SIM card breaks, your phone won't work. However, if you replace your SIM card, your phone will work again.
