Yes. It is a form of exercise, and exercise helps in a plan of weight loss. But regular use is required, and diet changes should be added to any plan to lose weight. (It's a "lifestyle" change.) Just riding the bike, even regularly, might not work if you're diet/lifestyle doesn't change.

If you're just pootling around, nothing much will happen, even if you stay on it for hours.

If you go all out, but only for a minute, nothing much will happen even if you pedal yourself sick.

The general numbers are about 450-600 calories/hour, if you're working yourself winded and sweaty. Can be more if you're fit enough to do a higher sustained effort.
