Why would a 1991 Buick century die when you put it in gear?

One of: 1) Inability of the computer to control engine idle speed as would result from a faulty IAC or a general poor running condidion. 2) Torque converter is locked. If this only happens hot, suspect a TCC (VCC) lockup solenoid. If this happens cold also, expect a damaged torque converter.
