The Clarinet is a wonderful jazz instrument, and was common in the earliest jazz bands. The clarinet has been overshadowed by the Saxophone as the woodwind voice in larger ensembles, largely because the saxophone is louder and can compete with brass sections. Some of the earliest jazz stars that played clarinet include Johnny Dodds and Sidney Bechet (who was later better known for playing soprano sax).
