In Australia light beer means less alcohol, that is done by adding less sugar or malt, resulting in a beer also lighter in calories.
Not sure about other countries.
In America, it refers to less calories. To achieve this, they use more water and less malt and hops, hence reducing the ABV%. WELL ONLY IF YOU DRINK IT !!!!!!!

∙ 12y agoFor starters both dark beer and light colored beer are "regular" beers. All beers are regular. As for your question the answer is yes and no. There are many styles of beer that is dark in color that have more calories than light beers, but many of those have a higher alcohol by volume percentage. There are also some styles that have less calories. The poster child for dark beers Guiness has less calories than a Bud lt per 12 ounce serving, and unlike their counterpart the brewers at Guiness don't remove the taste.
