Here is what I heard from the USDA:
Thank you for writing the USDA's Food Safety and Inspection Service.
We recommend using poultry and ground beef within 2 days of purchase, regardless of the date on the package. After this they can spoil. If the product looks ok and smells ok it is fine to use. If it smells bad or has a sticky, slimy feel it has spoiled and you should not use it.
A sulfur smell is definitely a sign of spoilage.
