Yes, the A train stops at the Port Authority Bus Terminal. All three of the trains on the blue line (the A, the C and the E) stop at 42nd Street-Port Authority Bus Terminal.

There is also an underground tunnel connecting the 42nd Street-Port Authority stop on the A-C-E line to the 42nd Street-Times Square Station (since the A-C-E runs up and down 8th Avenue, while the Times Square Station is at 7th Avenue), so you can walk underground from the 42nd Street-Port Authority Station to the 42nd Street-Times Square Station, without exiting the subway system.

No, the A train doesn't stop at Grand Central. The only subway trains that stop at Grand Central are the 4-5-6 (the dark green line), the 7 train (the purple line), and the S shuttle train (color grey), which runs between Grand Central and Times Square.

To get to the A train, take the S shuttle train from 42nd Street-Grand Central to 42nd Street-Times Square. Then walk through the tunnel that connects the 42nd Street-Times Square station to the 42nd Street-Port Authority Bus Terminal station. Transfer to the A at 42nd Street-Port Authority.

What subway do you take from 42nd Street Port Authority to 168th Street?

Take the A or the C trains (of the A-C-E, the blue line) to 168th Street. The A train is an express train, while the C train is local, but they both stop at 168th Street. Actually, 168th Street is the LAST STOP on the C train, so if you take the C, you can't possibly miss your stop. Unless you're like, a real moron, and then I can't help you.See the Related Link below for a complete New York City subway map.
