The Army has converted almost all of its troops to the M4, phasing out the M16.

The M4 is basically a shorter and lighter version of the M16. The M4 uses a retractable stock and a shorter barrel. Although the shorter barrel gives the M4 a shorter accuracy at range, the M4 trumps the M16s close quarter combat performance (CQB) due to its small size. A big reason for the adoption of a more CQB friendly weapon is due to the close quarter battles being fought in the Middle East. Another reason that concerns the conversion is the radical change in warfare; the wars of the future are much more likely to be conducted in urban areas rather then open landscapes. Open landscape combat is virtually dominated by modern vehicles and aircraft, leaving no space for foot soldiers.

The USMC is converting fully to the M16A4, which further blurs the line between both the weapons. The M16A4 is very similar to the M4 and mainly differs with its regular long barrel and full stock. USMC is also issuing M4s only to support personnel and officers.

The Army issued M4 does not support fully automatic fire. It only supports semi-automatic and burst fire. The special forces issued M4A1 however does support both fully automatic and semi-automatic firing rates.

Any rifle with a version two or version three gearbox. That includes the AR-15 series of guns (M4s, M16s, and anything of the like) or MP5s. These gearbox versions are the easiest to fix and upgrade.

Ar15 and m16 parts are interchangeable?

All M16s are AR-15s, but not all AR-15s are M16s. Most parts are interchangeable; however, the inside of an M16 lower receiver is milled differently to accommodate the auto sear.

How strong will the US military will be if they replaced all their m16s and m4s with MP5 submachine guns?

They'd be worse off. The MP5 is a very limited range weapon, firing a pistol cartridge. While the compact design may be nice for close quarters environments, the major drawback is that you would only have an effective range of 50 - 100 metres, whereas the M4 has an effective range of 500 metres at a point target, and 800 metres at an area target.

Will the M-4 replace M-16 in US Armed Forces?

In some units, it already has - several years ago, now. Special operations and light infantry units in particular have replaced their M16s with M4s (and this was done over a decade ago). However, some infantry units (most commonly, mechanised infantry units) have remained with the M16A4, rather than the M4. The Marines have also opted to retain the M16 (A4 and A5 variations), rather than phasing them out for the M4.

How many M16s are made in a year?

The companies that make them do not make the information easily available to the general public.

Why does the USMC use M16s if there are better guns out there?

Cost and practicality. the USMC uses the same guns as the rest of the US Army because it can then use the same bullets, making the supply of the USMC in wartime a much simpler process. (and cheaper by buying in bulk in peacetime) For the same reason many other NATO countrys' princial firearms all take the same caliber bullet. Plus the M16 is a good, accurate rifle, if a little unwieldy it does the job, and does it well.

What is the standard issue rifle for the US military in 2014?

At the moment it is the M16, however, the US military is currently transitioning to the M4. The term "M16" is a US military classification, the weapon is actually known as the Armalite. First used in the Vietnam war the M16 has seen several major upgrades, but is still much the same weapon as it was 40 years ago
