Roman Catholic AnswerThe Bible says that Jesus gave the power to forgive sins to his Apostles (John 20:19-23) ... "...He breathed upon them, and said to them, 'Receive the Holy Spirit; whose sins you shall forgive, they are forgiven them; and whose sins you shall retain, they are retained." But that was while Jesus was still alive so that was okay. In Matthew 16:17-19 Jesus gives the keys to the kingdom of Heaven to Peter (the first pope) and promised to uphold whatever decisions he made on earth, in heaven. But only Peter and the other apostles who were with Jesus were given the authority to forgive sins. Other people of the bible like Paul (who wrote most of the New Testament) didn't forgive sins but told people to "accept Christ" and when they did that and were baptized only then were there sins forgiven. But the Catholic religion has been revised so many times. Plus there have been many reports of gay priests and priests molesting children. If a priest does something like that, then do you really think he can forgive your sins if he himself is a child molester or a homosexual? Jesus died for us. A priest forgiving your sins is almost like saying that his blood isn't holy enough to forgive you. To your original answer the Bible does NOT say to confess your sins to a priest. (only BEFORE Jesus could priest do that, but only by offering sacrifices to God.)

BIBLICAL ANSWER

.

Even in the Old Testament people made confessions directly to God:-

Ezra 10:11

11Now therefore, make confessionto the LORD God of your fathers, and do His will; separate yourselves from the peoples of the land, and from the pagan wives."

Psalms 32:5

5I acknowledged my sin to You, And my iniquity I have not hidden. I said, "I will confessmy transgressions to the LORD," And You forgave the iniquity of my sin. Selah

The chief privilege of being a priest is to be able to approach God directly.

Hebrews 4:14-16 [NKJ]

14 Seeing then that we have a great High Priest who has passed through the heavens, Jesus the Son of God, let us hold fast ourconfession.

15 For we do not have a High Priest who cannot sympathize with our weaknesses, but was in all pointstempted as we are, yetwithout sin.

16 Let us therefore come boldly to the throne of grace, that we may obtain mercy and find grace to help in time of need.

Hebrews 10:19-22 {NKJ]

19 Therefore, brethren, having boldness to enter the Holiest by the blood of Jesus,

20 by a new and living way which He consecrated for us, through the veil, that is, His flesh,

21 and havinga High Priest over the house of God,

22 let us draw near with a true heart in full assurance of faith, having our hearts sprinkled from an evil conscience and our bodies washed with pure water.

Other versions may render Hebrews 10 verse 19 more clearly:-

[NET] 19 Therefore, brothers and sisters, since we have confidence to enterthe sanctuaryby the blood of Jesus,

[KJ] 19 Having therefore, brethren, boldness to enter into the holiestby the blood of Jesus,

All believers in this Church Age are a kingdom of priests:-

1 Peter 2 [NKJ]

7 Therefore, to you who believe,He isprecious; but to those who are disobedient, " The stone which the builders rejectedHas become the chief cornerstone,"

8 and " A stone of stumblingAnd a rock of offense."They stumble, being disobedient to the word, to which they also were appointed.

9 But you area chosen generation, a royal priesthood,a holy nation, His own special people, that you may proclaim the praises of Him who called you out of darkness into His marvelous light;

Rev 1 [NKJ]

5 and from Jesus Christ, the faithful witness, the firstborn from the dead, and the ruler over the kings of the earth. To Him who loved us and washed us from our sins in His own blood,

6 and has made us kings and priests to His God and Father, to Him beglory and dominion forever and ever. Amen.

There is no need for any intermediary between God and man:-

1 Timothy 2:5 :-

5For there is one God and one Mediatorbetween God and men, the Man Christ Jesus,

The Bible does not say to confess your sins to priests in the Church age. as man can go directly to God.

What is it called when you admit your sins to a priest?

When you admit your sins to a priest it is called a confession. Some say it is better to confess your sins to a higher power so that it is only between you and them.

How do you confess sins to god?

You can go to confessions at mass and you tell the priest and he can't tell anyone, then he will tell you what prayers to say and you say them

Is it necessary to confess your sins to be forgiven?

Roman Catholic AnswerIs it necessary? Strictly speaking, no, practically speaking, yes - for mortal sins. All mortal (serious sins that kill the life of grace in the soul) sins must be confessed to a priest, at least once a year. It is never *necessary* to confess venial (less serious) sins although it is a good idea.I say strictly speaking, no, as if there is literally no way you can get to a priest, you may always confess your sins directly to God, and, in the impossibility of getting to confession, you can be reasonably sure they are forgiven IF YOU HAVE PERFECT CONTRITION. Now, keep in mind that perfect contrition is nearly impossible, and it is nearly impossible to be unable to get to a priest, so we are talking really abstract here.In the normal course of the way reality is, and the way Jesus set up His church, yes, one must go to confession at least once a year, and preferably more often for all mortal sins.

What does the bible say about the seven deadly sins?

Obviously they are not called deadly for nothing.

Why confess to priest instead of Jesus?

The Catholic religion requires that mortal sins be confessed to a priest, as he has the authority to forgive sins. Protestants confess directly to God/Jesus.Roman Catholic AnswerBy confessing to a priest, you are confessing to Jesus. The priest is the priest of God, an "alter Christus". He stands in as God's ears and tongue. God works with us on our level through our senses. He told us to confess our sins, and He gave us priest to confess to. The passage below is from The One Minute Apologist:Those who deny as unbiblical the forgiveness of sins by God through priests must somehow account for the many biblical passages indicating confession to another human being of higher spiritual authority. For example: "They were baptized by him [John the baptist] in the river Jordan, confessing their sins"; Many also of those who were now believers came [to St. Paul] confessing and divulging their practices."The disciples (models for the later priesthood), had the power to "bind and loose": rabbinic terms for responsibilities which included hearing confession and dispensing forgiveness as God's representative ("loosing"), or, on the other hand, handing out penances ("binding").Matthew 18:18: "Truly, I say to you, whatever you bind on earth shall be bound in heaven, and whatever you loose on earth shall be loosed in heaven."John 20:23: "If you forgive the sins of any, they are forgiven; if you retain the sins of any, they are retained."2 Corinthians 2:10: "Any one whom you forgive, I also forgive. What I have forgiven, if I have forgiven anything, has been for your sake in the presence of Christ."Why can't we just go straight to God to confess?" In many instances, according to Catholic teaching, we can. We are ordinarily required to confess to a priest only in cases of grave, mortal sin (though it is highly encouraged for lesser sins). But the first reason we also go to the priest is because this is a biblical teaching, as seen in the passages above.from The One-Minute Apologist, by Dave ArmstrongBy the way, it is not the priest's personal "power" that forgives sins. The priest is just that a priest of God Almighty, the power that forgives sins is God who works through His priest.

What are the four steps to Catholic confession?

The first step is contrition, that is saying sorry to the people you have sinned to and getting their apology...Feel sorry for your sins too... this has cleansed you 50 % The second step is self examination. Recall all the sins you have commited. The third step is to confess it in the confessional box. The last step is penance.......to say the penance which you have been told by the priest. This has cleansed your soul 100 % God Bless!!!!

What acts say you are sorry for your sins?

I believe confessing one's sins is a way saying that you are sorry for sins you committed. Protestants repent their sins out loud, and Catholics confess to a priest in confessional. ____ If you have caused hurt to another person, apologizing to them in person is also important, and also making a real effort not to commit the same kind of sin again. This can be difficult but it means a lot and shows that you are sorry.

What happens during reconciliation?

1. The priest greets us, and we pray the Sign of the Cross. He invites us to trust in God. He may read God's Word with us.2. We confess our sins. The priest may help and counsel us.3. The priest gives us a penance to perform. Penance is an act of kindness or prayers to pray, or both.4. The priest asks us to express our sorrow, usually by reciting the Act of Contrition.5. We receive absolution. The priest says, "I absolve you from your sins in the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Spirit." We respond, "Amen."6. The priest dismisses us by saying, "Go in peace." We go forth to perform the act of penance he has given us.

What is the purpose of Aboriginal reconciliation?

Reconciliation is very important because through the sacrament of reconciliation you are sure that your sins are forgiven. Unlike Christians who pray silently and are not sure if their sins are forgiven, we can be sure. We confess with the priest and say our penance; we know that if we die at that moment we would go to heaven and have no sins in our souls. There are two types of sins mortal and venial; someone who dies with a mortal sin in their soul has little chance of making heaven.

Why do Roman Catholics confess their sins to a mere mortal sinful man who is no better than you?

God tells us to confess our sins to Him. In 1 John 1:9 He states: "If we confess our sins He is faithful and just to forgive us our sins and cleanse us from all unrighteousness."Now can a Roman Catholic priest do that? Does he have that sort of power? Of course not. But just the same, has he ever told you that he would cleanse you from all unrighteousness? I don't mean did he say "your sins are forgiven you..." but did he ever say that he personally would cleanse you from all unrighteousness? If he has ask him if he knows what is in Revelation 21:8. He is misled and misleading many as well.Roman Catholic AnswerThose who deny as unbiblical the forgiveness of sins by God through priests must somehow account for the many biblical passages indicating confession to another human being of higher spiritual authority. Can you say confession when you pray at night?

Of course you can confess your sins when you pray at night, as a matter of fact, you are urged to do this every night before going to bed. However, do not confuse this with the sacrament of Penance (popularly known as Confession). The Sacrament of Penance (aka Confession) requires a priest.

Why do Christians do things prohibited in Bible?

Rom:3:23: For all have sinned, and come short of the glory of God; 1John:8-10: If we say that we have no sin, we deceive ourselves, and the truth is not in us. 9: If we confess our sins, he is faithful and just to forgive us our sins, and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness. 10: If we say that we have not sinned, we make him a liar, and his word is not in us.
