It consists of three branches of government: The judicial, legislative, and executive. The Judicial branch consists of a Supreme Court at the top, the Court of Appeals, The Federal Courts, then all smaller, non-national courts. The legislative branch consists of a senate and a house of representatives. The Senate has 2 representatives from each state, and the House of Representatives has a number of representatives based on population of whatever state they occupy. For example: California, 2 Senators, and 54 representatives. The Executive branch is led by the president, who is the Commander in Chief of all armed forces. Congress(The Senate and House, another term for it) has the power to declare war though, so the President makes the decision to withdraw or send troops and order them as he sees fit. However, in the older wars with actual nations, peace treaties had to be approved by Congress. The President can veto a bill passed by both the Senate and the House, which then would require Congress to have 2/3 of Senators and representatives vote yes to override the veto, as opposed to a simple majority. The Supreme Court can declare acts of Congress or the President unconstitutional, which would void the bill/act void immediately. Congress also has the power to impeach judges of the Supreme Court. This elaborate system ensures that no branch of government gains too much power.
