You probably mean "aphelion", which is the term to use for a body orbiting around a sun. Aphelion is when a body, like the earth, is at its farthest point in its orbit around its sun. When the earth is at aphelion, it is winter in the Southern Hemisphere. People in the northern hemisphere are enjoying summer at that time. It does seem odd to us (in the north) that summer happens when earth is farthest from the sun, but remember that it is the tilt of earth's axis that gives rise to the seasons, and not our absolute distance from the sun.

In its orbit around the sun. Just as it is during all the other seasons.

Referring to the seasons in the northern Hemisphere . . .

-- The Earth is slightly closer to the sun in Winter, and slightly farther from the sun

in Summer. (Yes. That's worded correctly.)

-- In Summer, the Earth is on the side of the sun that faces the center of the galaxy.

In Winter, it's on the side of the sun that faces awayfrom the center of the galaxy.

No, it does not. We in the north are currently enjoying our summer season, and we are around the time when earth is farthest away from the sun. Aphelion is in early July. It is earth's tilt on its axis and not the planet's distance from the sun that governs the seasons.

Well when it's winter in the northernhemisphere (united states, Asia, Europe any place north of the equator) the earth is tilted away from the sun, while south of the equator, southern hemisphere is tilted toward the sun so it's summer. When it's winter in the southern hemisphere it's summer in the north.

That depends on which side of the Earth you are referring to.

The Earth's orbit is an ellipse, not a perfect circle. Earth is closest to the Sun on January 4, and farthest from the Sun about July 4. (These dates can slide a day or two each way, depending on the cycle of leap years.) The difference isn't much; just over a million miles or so.

So if you live in the northern hemisphere, the Earth is closest to the Sun in winter. If you live in the southern hemisphere, January is in the summer.

The part of the earth ... northern or southern hemisphere ... that's tilted toward the sun

at any particular time is experiencing Summer.

Winter is the season in the hemisphere that's tilted awayfrom the sun.

The Earth is closer to the Sun in northern winter. (Not if you live in Australia!)

Yes, but only in Australia. The Earth's orbit is an ellipse, and is closest to the Earth about January 4 each year. So northern hemisphere winters happen when the Earth is CLOSEST to the Sun.
