Gasoline consists mostly of the hydrocarbons isooctane and heptane. Under the conditions of an internal combustion engine, isooctane (usually just called octane) burns more smoothly (less explosively) and more completely than heptane. This, in effect will provide more usable energy, since the tendency of heptane to pre-ignite (ignite before the piston reaches the required point beyond top-dead-center) is somewat counteracted by the slower and more controlled burn of the octane.

Older engines (60's, 70's, 80's) unquestionably ran cleaner and with more zip on high-octane gasoline, but despite increased gas mileage, there was little or no saving in fuel cost because of the higher price of the premium fuel.

With today's significantly better fuel management systems, most regular car engines run perfectly well on regular gasoline, so save your money.
