They need to be checked, cleaned and repacked.
Yes they do need to be packed, and you might want to change the seal while your in there. The seal costs about 79Cents.
The front wheel bearings are a sealed unit so repacking is not possible nor necessary.
Wheel bearings? 4X4 ? 4X2?
how do i replace front wheel bearinbs on 2000 ford ranger 4wd
You can't ,they are a sealed unit. You have to buy a hub assembly.
Wheel bearings on 1995 Geo Prizms are sealed units and cannot be repacked with grease. You must buy new bearings to be pressed on hubs by mechanic with proper tools. If bearings are worn, replace ASAP before bearings start damaging hubs, you'll save bunches of money.
there are a total of 4 wheel bearings on the front both sides have an inner and outer bearing. the outer bearing is visable when you remove hub the inner bearing is visable when you remove rotor
Jack up the 2000 ranger. Remove the wheel and brake caliper. slide the rotor off. Take off the axle nut dust cover and remove the cotter pin. Remove the nut, and slide the assembly off. Change the bearings and races, then reassemble.
I had a bad right front wheel bearing on my 2004 ford ranger 4X4. When the mechanic took it for a ride he swore it was the left front wheel bearing that was bad but when he got it on the lift it turned out to be the right front.300 dollars for the part and 85 dollars for the labor plus tax.
Why are you changing wheel bearings so soon on a 2004 ? shouldn't this still be under warranty ???? I have a 1998 with 192,000 miles (I am the original owner) and have never changed the front wheel bearings ... They are still good too. I don't know about a 2004.... but on my 98, when I did the front brakes, I changed the front rotors too. New rotors came with new races installed in them already. Get new seals and Just clean and repack the bearings with grease and set the pre-load properly. Thats my 2cents worth. Good luck
An easy way to do it is to put some wheel bearing grease in the palm of your hand and then, scoop up the grease with the end of the wheel bearing. You will see the excess grease come out from between the bearings. There's an instructional video included below also, that shows how to replace these on a 93-97 Ford Ranger.
i am pretty sure the front bearings are part of the entire hub assembly. replacing the bearings requires replacing the enitre front hub. at least that's how it was on my 97 dualie.
