Yes, there are several strains of bacteria that colonize the digestive tract and the skin that are needed. In both the digestive tract and skin these bacteria prevent the formation of colonies of harmful bacteria or fungi. If antibiotics used to treat some bacterial illness wipe out the bacteria that do this fungal infections are particularly common. Certain strains of bacteria in the digestive tract help digest parts of foods we normally can't digest ourselves (e.g. some complex carbohydrates) or make vitamins that we need but are not common enough in foods.

Humans and these strains of bacteria are symbiotic organisms.
